The beloved story of Emma and Dexter is heading to the West End. One Day – The Musical, the stage adaptation of David Nicholls’ bestselling novel, will open at the Garrick Theatre on November 17, 2026, following its acclaimed world premiere at Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre earlier this year.
Jamie Muscato and Sharon Rose will reprise their roles as Dex and Em, the star-crossed lovers whose lives we follow on the same day—St. Swithin’s Day, July 15—every year for two decades. It’s a story that has captivated millions through Nicholls’ 2009 novel (which has sold over six million copies worldwide), the 2011 film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and most recently the hit 2024 Netflix series that made Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall household names.
Now it’s the theater’s turn.
The musical is adapted for the stage by David Greig, the former artistic director of the Royal Lyceum Theatre, with music and lyrics by Abner and Amanda Ramirez of the acclaimed American folk-rock band Johnnyswim, and additional material by Freya Catrin Smith. Max Webster, who earned acclaim for his productions of Life of Pi and The Importance of Being Earnest, directs.
For those unfamiliar with the story: Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew meet on the night of their graduation from Edinburgh University in July 1988. They spend the night together—not quite a one-night stand, but something that changes both of them. And then they go their separate ways. The narrative returns to them on the same date each year, charting the ups and downs, missed opportunities and second chances, joy and heartbreak that define their relationship over twenty years.
It’s a story about timing. About the people who matter most to us. About the way life rarely follows the path we imagined on the night we threw our caps in the air.
“From the moment we encountered One Day, we recognised its extraordinary emotional power,” said producers Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska of Melting Pot. Friend has been trying to bring the story to the stage for more than a decade, ever since he noticed fellow passengers on the London Underground reading the same book when it was first published in 2009.
The Edinburgh premiere proved the story translates powerfully to the stage. The production was extended by two weeks due to exceptional public demand, and there’s a particular poetry in the show debuting in the city where Emma and Dexter’s story begins—where they climbed Arthur’s Seat together on that first fateful morning.
Muscato, an Olivier Award nominee who has appeared in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, The Great Gatsby at the London Coliseum, and Moulin Rouge! at the Piccadilly Theatre, brings Dexter’s charm and flaws to life. Rose, who played Eliza Hamilton in Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre and the title role in Sylvia at the Old Vic, portrays Emma’s intelligence, wit, and quiet determination.
The creative team includes choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, set and costume design by Rae Smith, lighting design by Bruno Poet, sound design by Simon Baker, and music supervision by Nigel Lilley.
The production runs November 17, 2026 through March 14, 2027, with tickets starting at £30 ($37). The running time is approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes including one interval. The show carries an age guidance of 12+.
The Garrick Theatre is located at 2 Charing Cross Road, a short walk from Leicester Square tube station—right in the heart of London’s Theatreland.
