About This Event
Somerset House presents Through Our Eyes: Sámi Art and Culture, the UK’s first group exhibition dedicated to the art and culture of the Sámi, the only recognised indigenous people in Europe. Spanning five of Somerset House’s Terrace and Courtyard Rooms, the free exhibition brings together 18 Sámi artists across sculpture, installation, photography, video, design and performance. Curated by Sámi artist Matti Aikio and Somerset House’s Dr Cliff Lauson, it features rarely-seen work by pioneers including Britta Marakatt-Labba, Hans Ragnar Mathisen, Iver Jåks and Nils-Aslak Valkeapää alongside leading contemporary artists such as Tomas Colbengtson, Marja Helander, Olof Marsja and Lada Suomenrinne, plus a major new commission from Outi Pieski. The exhibition explores Sámi cultural identity, indigenous rights, the natural world and contemporary reworkings of traditional duodji handicraft. Free entry. Part of Somerset House’s winter programme.
