One of British acting’s most magnetic leading men is heading to the West End to take on theatre’s most coveted role. James Norton will play the title role in a major new production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, conceived and directed by the acclaimed German director Thomas Ostermeier, opening in London in autumn 2027.
Announced by producers Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions, the production pairs one of the screen’s busiest stars with one of European theatre’s most restlessly inventive minds — and it marks a genuine first: although Ostermeier’s stripped-back, blood-and-mud Hamlet has been touring the world for some eighteen years, this will be the very first time he has directed Shakespeare in English.
London audiences already know Ostermeier’s work well. In recent seasons he has delivered a celebrated The Seagull at the Barbican starring Cate Blanchett and Tom Burke, and an electrifying An Enemy of the People with Matt Smith at the Duke of York’s. Artistic Director of Berlin’s famed Schaubühne since 1999, he is a fixture of the great European festivals and was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
“It’s a privilege for anyone to take on the role of Hamlet. It’s also pretty terrifying! But with Thomas Ostermeier at the helm, I know I could not be in better hands. Both this role and this director have intrigued me and challenged me over the years, and so I cannot wait to start this journey with Thomas and see where it takes us.”

“I am pleased to be revisiting Hamlet for the West End with the great stage actor, James Norton. It will be my first time directing Shakespeare in English, and I am excited to explore the original text in order to bring this new production to life. My first Hamlet has been touring the world for 18 years so I am honoured to have the opportunity to bring it here to London with James, who in my mind is a perfect Prince of Denmark.”

Norton is no stranger to the stage — his shattering turn as Jude in Ivo van Hove’s A Little Life drew rapturous reviews on its West End transfer, and he has trodden the boards everywhere from the Royal Court to the Donmar Warehouse. But it is on screen that he has become a household name, from Happy Valley, McMafia, Grantchester and War & Peace to films including Little Women and Bob Marley: One Love. Eagle-eyed fans can currently catch him as Ormund Hightower in House of the Dragon, and he is soon to appear as the Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein in Sam Mendes’ ambitious four-film The Beatles event.
The creative pedigree behind the scenes is formidable too. Wessex Grove was named Best Producer at the 2026 Stage Awards, while Gavin Kalin Productions is a multi-award-winning fixture of the West End and Broadway — between them their recent credits read like a roll-call of the city’s biggest shows, including Cabaret, Vanya, A Streetcar Named Desire and that same blockbuster The Seagull.
For now, the finer details are being kept under wraps: the specific West End theatre and exact performance dates are still to be announced. Eager Prince-of-Denmark watchers can register their interest and be first to hear booking news at hamletwestend.com.
