Tate Britain has revealed the designs for a new garden set to transform the area outside its iconic Millbank gallery in Westminster. The project, known as the Clore Garden, is a collaboration between renowned landscape architect Tom Stuart-Smith, architects Feilden Fowles, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), and the Clore Duffield Foundation.

The new garden aims to create a welcoming green space for both visitors and local residents, providing a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city while promoting biodiversity. It will feature a mix of carefully selected plants, outdoor sculptures, and seating areas, designed to encourage moments of reflection and connection with nature.

A Space for Art, Nature, and Community

Alex Farquharson, director of Tate Britain, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “These stunning, innovative designs highlight the important role that museums can play in urban life, providing spaces for relaxation, inspiration, and creativity. We’re thrilled to share a first look at what will become a significant green space that unites art and nature, offering visitors and local residents new ways to engage with our collection.”

Creating a Haven in the Heart of London

Tom Stuart-Smith, known for his work on some of the UK’s most celebrated gardens, described the project as a unique opportunity. “It’s a privilege to transform the surroundings of one of London’s most important cultural landmarks into a biodiverse, engaging, and sustainable garden. We hope to create a space that feels like a true urban oasis, where people can relax, explore, and connect with art in a natural setting,” he said.

Bringing Nature to Millbank

The Clore Garden is set to become a vital part of Tate Britain’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Once complete, it will provide a much-needed green space for the area, offering a tranquil setting for art lovers, Londoners, and tourists alike.
