About This Event
The National Gallery stages its first-ever exhibition of 20th-century German paintings, charting the work of both pivotal Expressionist groups Die Brücke (The Bridge) and Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Featured artists include Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. With more than fifty international loans rarely seen in the UK—from the Neue Nationalgalerie, Brücke Museum, Tate, The Art Institute of Chicago and many others—the show celebrates the electrifying colours, energetic brushstrokes and formal fragmentation that opened the doors to abstraction. After London, the exhibition travels to the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin (9 September 2027 – 9 January 2028).
