This astonishing picture of a tunnel underneath the River Thames shows what could have been built instead of the iconic Tower Bridge.
The City Corporation invited proposals for a river crossing and in about 1976 John Standfield submitted his master plan.
The oil painting of the cross section shows a tunnel of remarkably low depth with gothic towers on both banks.
It is now going under the hammer at Christie’s in London where it is expected to fetch 4,000 pounds.
