Tourism within the UK, often dubbed ‘the invisible giant’, creates a huge amount of income as well as many job opportunities, yet, as the nickname suggests, it isn’t given the credit it deserves. The team at LOOK Insurance investigated to see just how popular the UK has become.
According to latest research, carried out by ‘tourismalliance’, the UK is the sixth most popular tourist destination in the entire world in terms of visitor numbers- behind France, China, The USA, Spain and Italy.
It’s estimated that Tourism produced up to £115.4 billion of direct and indirect income for the UK, around 70% of people visiting coming from Europe. Not only this, but research goes further in suggesting around one in every eleven jobs are created via Tourism. So it’s clear that the UK offers something that visitors from all over the world are interested in, especially from within Europe, but where is the money being spent? A good chunk of it is spent on caravan sites, the Best of British group has found.
This summer continued to follow the trend of the increasing amount of visitors coming to the UK on holiday. In particular, there has been a significant increase in the amount of continental families staying at the nation’s favourite holiday parks- in statics, holiday homes and lodges. The bulk of the bookings have apparently come from people who have travelled from France, Germany, Spain and The Netherlands.
Why the surge now?
Tailing off at the end of June, coming into July, the UK was experiencing a mini heatwave which meant that more and more people from continental Europe were opting for a holiday just across the water in sunny Britain. Although we don’t get much of it, when it’s here, it’s appreciated! The UK has an abundance of holiday parks throughout the entire country, ranging massively in location, price and experience. It meant that European families could pack their bags at the last minute and take advantage of what the country has to offer.
What better timing too? With a huge amount of publicity stemming from the birth of the Royal baby, great sporting success in the form of Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, another British Tour de France winner and the Lions triumphing in Australia, what better way is there to see what the UK is all about, especially when the Euro is strong against the pound.
Best of British chairman, Claire Jeavons, explained that UK caravan sites and holiday parks are proving to be a popular choice from Brits as well as continental Europeans. She commented: “There’s a great continental atmosphere and a sense of celebration on many of our members’ holiday parks this summer”.
So why not see what all the hype is about and explore the UK today.
