If you want to get attention for a new product or show, then the River Thames is certainly a great backdrop. Not only will you have thousands of workaday pedestrians walking along the Thames to see it at any time, but the world’s media is also never too far away.
Dynamo walks on water
The unassuming magician from Bradford has wowed the public and celebrities with his magic. When he appeared to walk across the River Thames in June 2011, he created media headlines across the world. He was filmed walking across the top of the Thames for about a hundred yards before a police boat pulled up alongside him and took him on board. There is speculation that he used a hidden platform under the water and that the police boat was actually a fake.
New look lotto is launched
In October 2013, The UK National Lottery had its first price rise since it began in 1994. It now costs £2 to play, but the good news is that the prize values have increased too. If you think you’re in with a chance of winning the UK National Lottery you can now also buy tickets online at any time – no need to queue at the shop. To ‘celebrate’ the price hike, six illuminated giant lotto balls, each of which was taller than a double decker bus, were floated down the River Thames in the early hours of 3 October 2013.
Gun-brandishing Jolie on speedboat
This summer when a member of the public saw four people brandishing guns on a speedboat on the Thames, they called the police who went along to investigate. In fact, the four were lookalikes of Daniel Craig, Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Angelina Jolie, and it was a publicity stunt to promote a new speedboat ride along the Thames operated by City Cruises. Police quickly discovered there was no cause for alarm and that the guns were in fact, fakes.
If you’re in London, you never know what event you might witness on the Thames while you’re there!
