6 Things to Do When Your Flight Gets Delayed

Aug 18, 2023 By jonathan

Unforeseen circumstances can happen at any time when you are traveling by air and can disrupt even the most carefully planned itineraries. One such irritating occurrence that can test the patience of even the most seasoned traveler is a flight delay.

It can be the most problematic experience for travelers, especially for the ones who are traveling by air for the first time. If you find yourself in this situation, fear not! Rather than frustrating or despairing, there are several productive and enjoyable ways to make the most of your time during a delay.

Below in this article, we are going to explain the things you can do when your flight faces unexpected delays. Read on!

Keep Yourself Updated

As soon as you become aware of the delay, ask the airport staff about the flight status. You can check it through airport monitors, the airline’s website, or their mobile app. These channels will provide you with real-time updates on the estimated departure time and any changes.

This way, you will have a clear understanding of the situation, which will eventually enable you to plan ahead accordingly. By doing this, you can make decisions about how to spend your time during the delay, whether it’s exploring the airport or simply relaxing and waiting for the new departure time.

Contact the Airline Company

Direct communication with the airline company will enable you to have valuable information, assistance, and any potential solutions. Reach out to the company’s customer service desk or helpline to inquire about the specific details surrounding the delay.

Talk to them with patience and try to understand the reasons behind the delay. It will give you a sense of the situation’s severity and help you gauge how long the delay may last. Now you can plan accordingly and make informed decisions about what to do next.

Furthermore, contacting a reliable source, i.e., the airline company, will enable you to find out potential alternatives or accommodations. Their representatives can guide you through available options, such as rebooking on a different flight or arranging for a connecting flight adjustment.

Check for Compensation

While not all delays are eligible for compensation, certain circumstances may entitle you to reimbursement or other benefits. That’s why it is recommended to instantly check for compensation if you notice that the flight is being late.

To look for compensation, you will have to first familiarize yourself with the passenger rights and policies of the airline regarding flight delays. Each airline has its own set of rules and regulations, and understanding them will give you clarity on what you may be entitled to in terms of compensation.

For example, if you have booked a flight from British Airways and it was disrupted, you can go to their website to find detailed flight delay compensation policies. If the delay meets certain criteria, such as exceeding 3 hour duration, you may be eligible for British Airways delay compensation.

Relax and Remain Calm

We can understand that it’s natural to feel frustrated or disappointed when your flight gets delayed. Everyone plans their journey accordingly, and when the flight gets delayed, stress can take over and add to their discomfort.

But we recommend that you adopt a positive attitude and make the most of the situation. Just remember that flight delays are often beyond your control and are part of the unpredictable nature of travel. Take a deep breath, find a comfortable spot, and keep yourself busy with some random activity.

These activities can include reading a book, listening to calming music, or practicing meditation or deep breathing exercises. You can even roam around in the airport and explore places.

Utilize Airport Amenities

You may not think of it like that but airports are more than just departure gates. They often provide a plethora of facilities and services to keep passengers entertained and comfortable during flight delays. If you are also facing a flight delay, you can explore the airport and discover what it has to offer.

Treat yourself to a delicious meal or go shopping if you love it. Yes, it’s true. Many airports also have duty-free shops, allowing you to browse through a variety of products and perhaps find a unique piece or a great deal on luxury items.

If you’re in the mood for relaxation, some airports provide lounges where you can unwind in comfortable seating, access free Wi-Fi, enjoy refreshments, and even take advantage of shower facilities.

Connect with Fellow Passengers

Yes, flight delays can be frustrating but there’s always a blessing in disguise. In that free time, you can meet new people, share experiences, and perhaps even make lifelong friends. Just be sure to go first and strike up a conversation with those around you.

Remember, you’re all in the same situation, so chances are you’ll find common ground and shared stories. These friendly conversations not only help pass the time more quickly but can also provide a sense of support during the delay.

If you are both avid travelers, you can share travel experiences, exchange recommendations, or simply engage in light-hearted conversations. Also, as you are all going to the same destination. Try to find out if there’s something special about the place you should try and how you should get accustomed to the culture and customs of the new place.

Conclusion

Dealing with a delayed flight can be frustrating and overwhelming but it doesn’t have to ruin your travel experience. By staying informed, keeping your calm, and taking proactive steps you can make the most of the situation and turn it into an opportunity for new experiences.
