Mar 29, 2018 By Jonathan

Goodbye, giant Thumb's Up, hello Lamassu. The fourth plinth is one of the best public art projects in London. Every few years, a new artwork is put on display on the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square (empty for a statue that was never made). It's prime place directly in front of the National Gallery is a great place to display a large work of art. There have been some … [Read more...] about Trafalgar Square: The Fourth Plinth Has a New Artwork – Replica of Statue Destroyed by ISIS

One of the most well-known spots in London, Trafalgar Square is a gathering place, demonstration locale, and a connecting point for several notable landmarks.  With Nelson’s Column at its centre, the square is ringed by such important buildings as St. Matin-in-the-Fields church, Canada House, the South African High Commission, and the National Gallery.  Trafalgar Square is also … [Read more...] about Great London Places – Trafalgar Square

Great London Buildings: St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church in Trafalgar Square

Jan 21, 2016 By John Rabon

Forming one of the corners of Trafalgar Square and existing as a landmark on par with Nelson's Column and the National Gallery.  Prior to the 13th Century, there is no reference to a church existing on the site in the City of Westminster.  The year 1222 marks the first recorded mention of the church when it came under a jurisdictional conflict between Eustace, the Bishop of … [Read more...] about Great London Buildings: St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church in Trafalgar Square

Fourth Plinth: Trafalgar Square Gets a New Statue – This Time a Horse

Mar 6, 2015 By Jonathan

It's time for a new statue on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. As many of you may know, they change the statue every few years, giving artists a chance to do something unique with the place. The last statue was a giant blue cockerel. The chicken has given away to a giant horse skeleton statue. I have a feeling it will be terrifying small children for the next couple … [Read more...] about Fourth Plinth: Trafalgar Square Gets a New Statue – This Time a Horse

The Official Center of London May Have to Be Moved 900 Yards From Its Current Location at Trafalgar Square Charles I Statue

May 22, 2014 By Jonathan

It's a rather strange question to ask - but did you know that there is an 'official' center of London? What makes this distinction so important? Well, all distances in Britain from London are measured from this point - so it's important to get right. Well, new research from the Estate Agency Knight Frank, has claimed that the center of London actually needs to be moved 900 … [Read more...] about The Official Center of London May Have to Be Moved 900 Yards From Its Current Location at Trafalgar Square Charles I Statue

Photo: Nelson’s Column under Construction, Trafalgar Square, April 1844

Oct 28, 2013 By Jonathan

Check out this glorious picture of Nelson's Column under construction in Trafalgar Square in 1844 - a very old picture. It was taken just 5 years after the invention of photography. It was actually taken by William Henry Fox Talbot - the inventor of modern photography. We love the juxtaposition of something old framed with something new - which at the time Nelson's Column was! … [Read more...] about Photo: Nelson’s Column under Construction, Trafalgar Square, April 1844

Giant Blue Chicken Unveiled on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth

Jul 25, 2013 By Jonathan

The empty Fourth Plinth has been home to some rather interested art installations in recent years. The latest just unveiled today is no exception. It's a giant blue cockerel (that's Rooster in American-speak). It certainly is... interesting. It will be in place and photobombing your tourist photos for the next 18 months. I much preferred the model of the HMS … [Read more...] about Giant Blue Chicken Unveiled on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth

Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth Gets a New Statue

Feb 24, 2012 By Jonathan

Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth is famous as the place where artists get to create a temporary sculpture to live in the square amongst Britain's Kings and Admirals. The latest tenant on the fourth plinth is a broze statue of a boy on a rocking horse. I personally was rather fond of the HMS Victory which adorned the plinth for the last year and I'll miss it.
