In a major coup for the UK fashion scene, London is set to host the largest-ever collection of vintage Gianni Versace designs in a groundbreaking exhibition opening this July.
The “Gianni Versace Retrospective,” which will be housed at Arches London Bridge from July 16, 2025, promises to be a spectacular showcase of the legendary designer’s revolutionary vision and enduring legacy almost three decades after his death.
Fashion Masterpieces on Display
Visitors to the exhibition will have the rare opportunity to view over 450 original vintage garments and accessories, many of which have never before been displayed in the UK. The collection spans 21 of Versace’s most influential collections, from Spring/Summer 1988 to his final Autumn/Winter 1997-98 line.
The retrospective will feature iconic looks worn by some of the most recognizable figures of the era, including Princess Diana, supermodels Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, and musical icons Elton John, George Michael, and Liz Hurley.
London’s Special Connection
The choice of London for this major retrospective is particularly fitting given Versace’s deep connections to the city. The exhibition highlights the significant influence London and its cultural icons had on the designer’s work throughout his career.
Elton John, one of Versace’s closest friends, famously owned every silk shirt designed by Gianni – several of which will be featured in the exhibition. Princess Diana, who became a close confidante of the designer and a symbol of reinvention in his clothes, is also prominently represented through various looks and archival documents.
The exhibition further explores Versace’s relationship with London-born supermodels Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, who featured in many of his most legendary campaigns. These collaborations are showcased alongside George Michael’s chart-topping “Freedom” which memorably featured the supermodels lip-syncing in both the music video and on Versace’s catwalk.
Cultural Legacy and Relevance
Beyond the glittering array of fashion pieces, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how Versace’s aesthetic continues to influence contemporary understanding of identity, fame, and consumption.
“As a genius of his time, it’s fascinating to see these incredible collections assembled under the curved arches of the venue,” says Liz Koravos, Managing Director of Arches London Bridge. “Gianni Versace ties to so much in modern culture and his legacy is enduring, a mark of a talented designer.”
Curator Karl von der Ahe from Dreamrealizer adds: “Bringing this retrospective to London feels especially meaningful. Gianni Versace’s bold, unapologetic vision revolutionised fashion, and this city—so rich in creativity and cultural influence—provides the perfect stage to celebrate his legacy.”
From Private Collections to Public Display
The exhibition has been made possible through the efforts of private collectors who have preserved Versace’s clothing for decades, including Antonio Caravano, Rossella Catapano, Franco Jacassi, Salvatore Alderuccio, and Doris Brugger.
Their dedication to preserving these fashion masterpieces allows the public a rare glimpse into the opulent world of one of fashion’s greatest visionaries, whose daring designs – from baroque prints to bondage-inspired creations – forever changed the industry’s landscape.
