The world’s largest early music fair takes place in November at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
The Greenwich International Early Music Festival and Exhibition will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a programme of concerts, master classes and instrument demonstrations for early music enthusiasts, amateur musicians and curious visitors sightseeing in Greenwich, on the Thames east of London.
Highlights of the festival include performances by the Renaissance music ensemble Pantagruel, early music rebels Red Priest, recorder virtuoso Mattias Maute with Trinity Laban alumnus Ibi Aziz and Emma Murphy, and European baroque renovators L’Arpeggiata directed by Christina Pluhar.
The festival’s exhibition comprises a wide cross-section of early instrument makers from around the world, shops, music publishers, societies, recording companies and early music forums.
The exhibition will be held in the Royal Naval College’s Painted Hall, often described as the finest dining hall in the Western world. The ceiling was painted in the early 18th century by James Thornhill and shows the triumph of Peace and Liberty over Tyranny. In January 1806 Admiral Lord Nelson’s body was brought to the hall to lie in state after his death in the Battle of Trafalgar.
The Greenwich International Early Music Festival and Exhibition runs from 11 to 13 November. Tickets cost £8 for one day, £13 for two days, or £17 for all three. Children under 14 free. A three-day ticket bought before 4 November costs £10.
