About this London Attraction
Soho Theatre, located at 21 Dean Street in the heart of London’s West End, is a contemporary theater and comedy venue that has been entertaining audiences since 2000. However, the building that now houses the Soho Theatre has a rich history that dates back to the early 17th century.
Originally constructed in 1660 as a townhouse for Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston, the building was later transformed into a tavern and used as a meeting place for Whig politicians in the early 18th century. In the mid-19th century, it became the French House, a popular hangout for French immigrants and intellectuals. During World War II, the French House became a favorite meeting spot for members of the French Resistance, who would plan their operations there over a glass of wine.
In 1956, the building was purchased by Freddie Burns, who transformed it into a members-only club called the Soho Theatre Club. The club quickly became a popular haunt for the city’s bohemian crowd, attracting artists, writers, and musicians alike. In the 1970s and 1980s, the building was used as a rehearsal space for some of the era’s most notable comedians, including Alexei Sayle, Rik Mayall, and Ade Edmondson.
In the late 1990s, the building was purchased by a group of theater enthusiasts who saw its potential as a performance space. After an extensive renovation, the Soho Theatre officially opened its doors in 2000, with a mission to showcase the best in contemporary theater, comedy, and cabaret. Since its opening, the Soho Theatre has become one of London’s most beloved cultural institutions, presenting groundbreaking productions and hosting some of the best comedians from around the world.
Today, the Soho Theatre continues to thrive, attracting audiences from all over the city and beyond. Its diverse programming includes everything from cutting-edge plays and musicals to stand-up comedy and improv shows. With its rich history and commitment to innovative programming, the Soho Theatre is a true gem of London’s cultural landscape.
