London is well known for its plentiful street markets and the traders that come hand in hand with these. However, if you are visiting for a longer period, you may become bored of the bigger and more established of these and end up seeking out something new.
One of the best little markets you will be able to find anywhere in the city will be Venn Street Market, Clapham’s little gem that focuses on delivering the freshest products at the best prices. It’s no surprise that foodies will flock here each week to pick up all new delights.
Venn Street Market takes place every Saturday throughout the year (Christmas breaks aside). It is held between 10 am and 4 pm each week.
The market can be found in the vicinity of Clapham Common, which makes it a great place to visit if you happen to be staying in nearby short rentals in London, or even just visiting the popular area.
Clapham is a fantastic place to visit, because it offers a range of different things to see and do. From the brilliant little cafes and bars that are situated around the area to the fantastic boutiques and shopping chains found dotted throughout, your entire visit to Clapham can be centred around a visit to Venn Street Market.
To get to the market, it could not be easier. You simply need to arrive at Clapham Common on the Northern Line of the Tube and make the short walk to Venn Street. Other options include the overground stations at Clapham High Street (Southern) and Clapham Junction (Mainlines), and bus services 35, 37, 50, 88, 137, 155, 249, 322, 345 and 417.
It’s also really accessible for those who would rather drive into the market. Just come off at the South Circular of the A3 and you can follow the signs. Good news is that there is even free parking at the weekends – ideal for those who are looking to visit the market.
There are a number of different traders operating in the Venn Street Market, offering a wide range of locally-sourced and produced items to give customers the freshest countryside fare.
The market has a strong ethos for ensuring that prices are fair and that goods are of the best quality, so it ensures that all traders working there are local and are sourcing their products from nearby.
All of those selling at the market are either farmers or small independent producers from the surrounding areas, so you know you are getting something high quality and local.
One of the most celebrated and famous of the traders working on Venn Street is the Old Post Office, a company that started in the area more than 30 years ago. It provides simple and affordable baked goods for all, ‘without the mystification and elitism’.
Another favourite will be Ted’s Veg, a stall hosted by one of Lincolnshire’s best farmers. You can be assured that this is the freshest veg you will find anywhere, with produce being harvested each day, and new products added to the stall throughout the day as it arrives fresh from the picking.
Other top traders include the likes of the Portland Scallop Co, bringing the very best in local fresh shellfish to Venn Street, and Gilcombe Farm, which has a range of cold cuts and fresh meats coming straight from its farm in Somerset.
