The Painted Hall, at the Old Royal Naval College, one of the Jewels of Greenwich will be closing for 6 months from Sunday. This is one of the most amazing things you need to see in Greenwich but if you’re planning on seeing it for the next 6 months, remove it from your itineraries.

Why is it closing? The Old Royal Naval College received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a massive multi-year restoration of what has been called the “Sistine Chapel of Britain.” Part of the crucial renovation work will force them to shut the hall to visitors for a short period of time (thankfully over the winter months when visitors numbers wold be down anyway).

It will re-open in early 2017.

Here’s a BBC report from last year about the proposed renovations:

  1. Thank you–very helpful. I will update my “places to go” list with the closure information.

  2. i have been there a few times……Last time i was there they were filming. Every time I turn around it I see it in a movie! Don’t they make money from all the film work for renovations? I just watched Now You See Me 2 & they filmed in that whole area.
